Golden Prairies

2006, Oil on Canvas, 18 X 24
It was the Latin phrase; “Cuius est solum eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos” that inspired me to paint “Golden Prairies” which means, "For whosoever owns the soil, it is theirs up to the sky and down to the depths." First coined by Accursius of Bologna in the 13th century.

Portrait of Vasily Andreyevich Zhukovsky | original by Karl Brüllov, 1837-1841. The above original painting is documented in the "The Artist" A story by Taras Shevchenko, Kiev, 1989. Famous painter and professor Karl Brüllov donated the portrait of the Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky as a lottery prize, whose proceeds were used to buy Taras Shevchenko's freedom on May 5, 1838. The lottery where the portrait was raffled took place even before the portrait was finished, in April 1838. Zhukovsky's portrait was won by Czarina Alexandra Fyodorovna who presented it to the successor. In the same year Shevchenko was accepted as a student into the Academy of Arts in the workshop of Karl Brüllov. Shevchenko also wrote in Russian and left several masterpiece paintings.
